Doodled Autumn – Square Dramatic Blend

This will be my last project post for a while as I will be having shoulder surgery this week and will be out of commission for at least four weeks. To help pass the time (as I will be unable to craft for a while), my plan is to post some “throwback” projects of my favorite cards from previous blog posts. Some of these cards may be familiar to you or you may have not yet seen these, as I will be choosing cards from over the past three years. I will also be posting the link to each project in case you want to see the step by step instructions. I hope you enjoy these throwback posts and that they spark some creativity for you! It’s my way of staying “crafty” when I cannot actually craft, LOL.

Today, I have a card that uses the Doodled Autumn stamp set that is currently included in the Autumn Splendor Card Kit from Gina K. Designs. This card kit is currently available until the next kit comes out or it sells out, whichever comes first. Once a new kit is released the contents of the Autumn Splendor Card Kit will be sold separately. I chose the largest stamp from this set to gold emboss for my focal image and created a dramatic ink blend to showcase the image. I love creating these dramatic ink blends on colored cardstock, it definitely adds a wow factor and is a simple way to highlight an image. With the size and shape of this large image I thought it would be perfect for a square card. I chose the largest stitched and layering dies from the Master Layouts 3 Die Set to create a perfectly cut layered square panel for my image. All of the stamps, dies, inks, cardstock and embellishments are from Gina K. Designs. Let’s get started!!

I will be doing all of my work today on my Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat.

To start, I take the largest stitched rectangle from the Master Layouts 3 Die Set and cut out of Tranquil Teal Cardstock, running them through my Big Shot Die Cut Machine. I then place the panel into my MISTI Stamp Positioner and center the largest image from the Doodled Autumn Stamp Set over the panel. I picked up the stamp with the door of my MISTI then prepped the panel with my Anti Static Powder Bag. I then stamped the image onto the panel using Versamark Ink, added Gold Embossing Powder then heat set with my Heat Tool.

Using a soft cloth I buff away the anti static powder from the panel. I then take my Blending Brush and blend Tranquil Teal Ink around all four sides of the panel, not quiet all the way up to the image. I then blend Blue Denim Ink around all four sides and fade the ink towards the image, being careful to not fully cover the previous color. Next, I blend In The Navy Ink around the edges of all four sides, again being careful not to fully cover the previous color. To further deepen the color and add a dramatic look, I blend Black Onyx Ink around the very edges of the stitching on the panel using my Mini Blending Brush and this completes my blending.

I now take the largest layering square die from the Master Layouts 3 Die Set and cut out of Tranquil Teal Cardstock, running them through my Big Shot. To add a gold trim to this panel I press the edge of my Versamark Ink Pad onto the edges of the panel then add Gold Embossing Powder and heat set with my Heat Tool. Using Liquid Glue I adhere the two panels together. *Gold metallic cardstock could have also been used for the layering, however, when I wanted my gold accents to match my embossed image. This is also a great hack to use when you may not have metallic paper on hand!

To create a square card base I cut a 5″ x 10″ piece of Tranquil Teal Cardstock then placed it into my Scor Buddy and scored it at 5″ creating a 5″ x 5″ square card base. To give my panel a little lift and dimension, I cut three 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ pieces of white cardstock then glued them to the back of the panel. I then mounted the panel onto my card base using Liquid Glue.

To create a sentiment for my card, I took the largest banner die from the same Master Layouts 3 Die Set and cut out of Tranquil Teal Cardstock, running them through my Big Shot. For easier stamping, I place the negative piece that the banner was cut from into my MISTI then placed the die cut into it. I chose two sentiments from the same Doodled Autumn Stamp Set and lined them up across the die cut then stamped them onto the banner using Amalgam Obsidian Black Ink. To add a little shading to my sentiment banner, I used my Mini Blending Brush to blend Blue Denim Ink around the very edges.

I wanted to create a gold banner to layer behind my sentiment banner. I already used the largest die for my sentiment so to create an even longer banner, I took the same die that I used for my sentiment and did some partial die cutting. To do this, I took a piece of Tranquil Teal Cardstock and placed the die towards the end (so there is room to shift the die over in the next step) then placed them between my cutting plates with the shorter end of the cardstock hanging out of the cutting plates then ran them through my Big Shot. *The die will only cut where it is placed between the plates… I do not want to cut the die out completely, only one end. Next, to make the banner longer, I placed the die onto the cardstock towards the other end then wiggled the die a bit until I feel it fall back into the previous cut lines and hold it in place using some Pixie Tape. I then again placed them in between the cutting plates leaving the die end with the previous cut hanging out of the plates and ran them through my Big Shot. I now have a longer banner die cut piece to mount behind my sentiment. *Another way to create the look of a longer die cut piece is to just use the die to cut another banner then cut the ends off to mount behind each end, however, I wanted a solid strip that covered the entire length of my sentiment.

To add gold accents to the ends of my layering banner I pressed my Versamark Ink Pad onto both ends, added Gold Embossing Powder and heat set with my Heat Tool. For a more smooth, thicker look to the embossed ends, I added Versamark Ink over the embossed ends then again added Gold Embossing Powder and heat set with my Heat Tool. *The more layers of embossing you add the smoother and thicker the piece will become.

Next, I added Liquid Glue and adhered to two banner pieces together. To create a little separation between my sentiment and panel I cut a two more banners using the same die then stacked and glued them to the back of my sentiment using Liquid Glue and adhered the sentiment to my card front.

Using my Jewel Picker I added some Gold Pearls using Liquid Glue and this completes my card.

I hope you enjoyed today’s card and picked up a couple of tips along the way! This fun layout is really very simple to create, the gold embossing along with the depth of color is what really makes this card shine. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out this stamp set as there are several other great images as well as many sentiments!
